  • I witnessed an election in 1976 where Mobutu had one competitor. Children sang "Nous sommes les Zairois" while men drank palm wine provided by the military. Women did not vote. There were two large boxes to cast your vote. One was green with a picture of Mobutu in his leopard skin hat.
